Blue Sky is a webcomic created by Jacob Bond. Debuting on the Internet on December 5th, 2005 the comic blends elements of various types of anime and manga genres. Combining comedy, romance, and action the comic follows familiar formulas found in manga.

Blue Sky is fantasy-based, taking place in modern Tokyo. While it often refers to Japanese folklore and myth, it tends to avoid specific references and instead often creates its own version of mythology.

[edit] Plot

Blue Sky is about Sayuri Maedagawa and Ryuichi Godo, two Japanese teenagers who discover they are destined to fight against a horde of demons. The two plus one other are reincarnated every one hundred years due to a spell Sayuri cast in a past life. The thousand year old cycle will continue until they finally ensure the final battle ends differently.

While the comic's plot is the overall focus of the series, the comic relies heavily on character development and interaction, featuring different subplots in addition to the main story. One such subplot focuses on Mai's infatuation with Atsumori and her encounters with his girlfriend Rieko. Another is Kikyo's inner conflict between her sworn duties and her personal feelings, and yet another involves the love triangle between Daisuke, Sayuri, and Ryuichi.

[edit] Artist's Goals

The creator of Blue Sky has always been clear about his goals in making this comic: to improve his abilities. The comic began as a way to improve his artist abilities as well as learn the process of making a comic. He often refers to Blue Sky as a "starter comic" so he can overcome his shortcomings and make his next comic better.

While he does hope and is willing to take the comic to greater levels he has always been clear the comic is a learning tool.

[edit] Changes To The Comic

The comic has gone through many changes. It began as pencil drawings with a slant more towards details attempting to emulate the style used in Megatokyo. Once the comic reached Chapter 3 the arwork changed, now being inked as well as computer shaded in a tapestry of greys. The artwork also began moving towards a more anime feel at this time. It moved away from tiny details and embraced a more cartoonish exaggerated style in vein of series such as Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyou!, or Battle Athletes.

Beginning on October 31st, 2008 the comic made another change, switching from grey colors to full color.

[edit] Spin-offs

A new pay subsite launched on September 9th, 2008. For one dollar per month the site offers access to two new full color comics each week, one pin-up and one wallpaper each month, and other extra content not available on the main site. The inaugural comic was Blue Sky: Summer Song, which tells the story of Kikyo's first love and the tragic events that follow. A preview can be found at the site.

Blue Sky: Winter Song will follow when Summer Song ends. Whether future comics continue beyond those two series will depend on subscribers.

[edit] The Future

The slow process of redrawing and coloring the archives is underway but it is unknown when it will be completed. Books are planned to be published through Lulu.com once the archives have been finished.

As previously mentioned a new series called Blue Sky: Winter Song will follow Summer Song at the pay subsection.
