Comic Shorts is a webcomic by John Hood and Nathan Spencer. The actual beginning date of the series is difficult to pin down exactly. The first issue was released on 2/14/05, however all the main characters did not show up until several issues later, and the series did not have an actual title until just under a year ago. The posting of the first comic is generally accepted as the official release date (which is ironically John's least favorite holiday), and is referred to by those in the series as the "Comic Shorts-iversary".
Originally beginning as John's attempt at making a serious comic about a ninja named Dragon Master, this idea was quickly abandoned in favor of more interesting (funny) comics. Label Buddy first appeared in issue 6, and Leko in issue 8. John draws comics more frequently than Nathan and has more than 80 of them online.
Nathan's comics were not part of the series at the beginning. They primarily centered around his character, Leko, ranting about things that annoy him with other characters showing up from time to time. Nathan does not draw comics as often, but his are much higher quality due to his use of programs like Flash and Photoshop.
[edit] Characters
- Dragon Master - Dragon Master is a ninja who is very easily bored and often tries to find means of entertainment. These can involve anything from practical jokes to senseless violence. (He counted 1,596 licks to the center of a freakin' Tootsie Pop!) He often solves his problems by blaming and/or killing Label Buddy. Dragon Master is the comic form of John.
- Leko - Leko the robot is undoubtedly the smartest character in the series, as he is quick to point out. He plays video games excessively and hates annoying and/or stupid people, often dealing with them violently. He often comes up with elaborate plans to achieve a simple objective which, more often than not end up failing. Leko is one of two comic forms of Nathan. (See Real Life Characters)
- Label Buddy - In a nutshell, Label Buddy is dumb. Dumber than said nutshell, even. He is the stereotypical idiot of the comic series, often appearing when somebody needs to say something stupid, get hurt, or get hurt as the result of saying something stupid. Label Buddy has died several dozen times throughout the series, leaving everyone else wondering how he returns in the next issue. Leko's explanation is that Label Buddy does indeed die, but is replaced by a clone each time. Dragon Master theorizes that he is so stupid that neither Heaven nor Hell want to deal with him, and he has thus been granted immortality. He is the comic form of Dustyn, a friend of the authors.
- Real Life Characters- RL Characters are human versions of the comic characters with the same personalities except Label Buddy, whose human form is not a total idiot. They often appear to announce updates or changes to the series, breaking the fourth wall in the process. Nathan however, has added his human self to the cast of his comics because he felt that Leko was lacking some social qualities unique to human beings (such as the ability to hit on female characters, and generally be a pervert).
- Tailii- Tailii is was the first original female character of Comic Shorts. Originally drawn in an odd assortment of armor and fighting with dual scimitars, her look has been simplified to a teal t-shirt with Leko's symbol on it and blue jeans. Her personality is childish and energetic, though her actual age is never specified.
- Elizabeth- Elizabeth is the second female character of Comic Shorts. She first appeared in issue 77 for no apparent reason, and attempted to hug everyone. Leko responded with a shout of "Code Pink" and was "beam-upified", while Label Buddy displayed his lack of intelligence by not knowing what a hug is.
- Sammy- The third and possibly final female character of the series. She arrived on the planet when her ship crashed, wearing a high-tech suit of armor similar to Samus Aran's powersuit, though green in color. In another reference to the Metroid series, she was mistaken for a man before removing the suit. Dragon Master thinks she is hot.
- Speck of Dirt- Speck of Dirt is...a speck of dirt. He is one of the main villains of the series, often trying to kill Label Buddy (though curiously enough, he also clones him according to Leko.) He was transformed into a Spartan style mech for a while, but changed back when the idea didn't stick.
- Gex- Gex was a lizard, and used to be one of the main characters. He really didn't appear that often, and his character was permanently killed off (or so it was thought) due to the offensive comments made by the real life person he was based on. Yes, his name was an obvious ripoff of a video game character.
- Shadowy Figure- Shadowy Figure is another villain. He does evil stuff usually involving harming the main characters for one reason or another.
- Villain- Another villain who is a ninja and has a demonic arm. He may be some sort of demon in human form unable to change his arm.
- Dark Buddy- Dark Buddy an evil clone of Label Buddy. For some reason he seems to be British. An evil mastermind who has done some somewhat idiotic things. He tries impersonating Label Buddy in order to "do evil," and ends up the subject of much senseless violence from the other characters.
- The New Yorker- Another character based off of a friend of John's (from New York), who came up with the character and the name. His purpose is the same as most others: to kill Label Buddy.
- Mii and Yoo - Originally spawned from a bad joke between the authors, Mii and Yoo are sister cat girls who made their appearance in issue 92 (well, one of them did). What they'll have to do with the upcoming storyline is still unknown at this point.
- Ace- A mysterious character who wields bladed cards. Little is known about her at the moment, except for the fact that she doesn't appear to be allied with either side, good or bad.
