A man who was hired to retrieve Nirel, attacks them but is killed when a strange robot appears and mangles him. Nirel and Kafka soon learn that nearly everyone has seemingly disappeared in the flash of light. Later on they meet a deranged family, one of whom resurrects her daughter's still born child as a direct link to 'God.' Kafka creates a multi headed monster out of seemingly nothing, when she and Nirel are in danger.

Somehow it is responsible for what has happened to the world. Jenny on the hunt for Kafka and Nirel since the death of her niece, is attacked by a strange doctor when an explosion of white light saves her.
[edit] Section C (parts 12-16)
Kafka feeling a pull to walk north has landed them both in Omaha. There at a sleep research facility, she discovers that she is in fact the walking nightmare of nurse who worked there. Nirel and Kafka are attacked by Jenny, now possessed by Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Jenny tells of how Yggdrasil stole all the flesh it could grab and expelled all the dreams into the world. Kafka, gravely wounded, creates a nurse who saves her life. It is revealed that she is a dream that can dream, and as such can create nightmares in the world, but at a cost to her sanity. Jenny and Kafka fight, but it is the last spark of the real Jenny that allows Jenny to commit suicide. Nirel and Kafka lie on the ground, slowly bleeding to death after the fight. Nirel realizes she's fallen in love with Kafka.
