[edit] Plot Summary

Many years ago, after the death of their mortal sister Sappho, the nine Greek Muses of the Arts built a school on the side of Mount Helicon and suspended it in the sky. The school was built to train all kinds of immortals into becoming muses: coaches in the arts. However, the Head Muse, Calliope, wouldn't feel satisfied until they had succeeded in teaching at least one mortal the ways of the muse. They would just have to wait until a mortal was born who would accept them and be trusted with the secrets of the immortals ...

Fast forward to the present day. Calliope has found her mortal student in the form of sixteen-year-old Charlotte 'Charlie' Fairfax: a neurotic, nerdy girl who has no extraordinary abilities other than a mind open enough to accept the fact that satyrs, faeries and all sorts of make-believe creatures actually exist. Under the protection of a pessimistic elf named Brigit, she enrolls at the Muse Academy with the purpose of surviving the school year. And I do mean surviving ...

[edit] Characters

[edit] Main Characters

  • Charlie Fairfax: the reluctant protagonist. Charlie is a sixteen-year-old mortal girl from Pennsylvania who is chosen practically at random to attend a school for muses. Unlike her classmates, she has no exceptional talents and no magical abilities. If anything, she is a klutz who only gets in peoples' way. But luckily, it is the desire to protect Charlie that draws her friends together and forces them to work as a team. As of yet, she doesn't know which classes to take.
  • Brigit: Brigit met Charlie for the first time when she broke into her home on Calliope's command to steal some of her poetry for review. Later, she begrudgingly reveals the Academy's origins to her to persuade the mortal to stay. This rare act of compassion earns her the role as Charlie's first roommate at the Academy. Brigit has purplish-tinged skin appears to be of (dark?) elf origins. She is a Tragedy major and Astronomy minor.
  • Mina: a seemingly nice angel who is a member of the Aphrodite House sorority. Her actions indicate she isn't as nice as she seems, but it is too early to tell.

[edit] Good Guys

  • The Muses: The Muses are goddesses of the Arts who built the school to teach their craft to young immortals. They are nine sisters, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Each one represents a different art, which they teach as professors at the Muse Academy.
    • Calliope: The Muse of Epic Poetry, Head Muse and Charlie's confidant while attending the Academy. Calliope was the brains behind the school, and the one to spearhead the concept of inviting a mortal student to attend. She often seems to instinctively know what is going on in her students' lives. She is very tall with long brown hair and has a literary-themed fashion sense. Her muse colour is burgundy.
    • Erato: The Muse of Romantic Poetry. Erato is very dizzy and laid back. She hates fighting of any sort and is usually the voice of reason when fights break out amongst the sisters. She is of medium height with short blonde hair and wears a sundress and large hat with a peacock feather. Her muse colour is pink.
    • Melpomene: The Muse of Tragedy. Melpomene has a very pessimistic outlook on life and seems to live for schadenfreude. She has a long-running rivalry with Thalia, and is usually on the receiving end of her jokes. She is the tallest Muse with long blue hair and clothes that make her appear to glide as she walks. Her muse colour is grey.
    • Thalia: The Muse of Comedy. Thalia exists to make the lives of her sisters and students a lot more interesting. Her favourite target is Melpomene, who seems to take her jokes a lot harder than the rest of the Muses. She is the shortest Muse and has orange hair, tinted glasses and wears overalls with untied sneakers. Her muse colour is teal.
    • Clio: The Muse of History. Clio exerts a motherly aura and is very kind to her students, although her class is known to be incredibly boring. She is short and dumpy with an hourglass design on her dress. Her muse colour is yellow.
    • Euterpe: The Muse of Music. She is known as the strictest of the Muses and is a sharp-tongued perfectionist, determined that every student that graduates from her field will be the best. She is tall with brown hair curled into a treble clef and a wears smart green dress. Her muse colour is dark green.
    • Urania: The Muse of Astronomy. She is a dreamer who has a tendency to space out during her lessons. Urania is of medium height with a bizarre fashion sense. Her muse colour is blue.
    • Terpsichore: The Muse of Dance. She is a typical gym teacher; extremely strict and slave-driver-esque to her pupils. She is very short with a small frame, crazy spiky hair and wears legwarmers with her dance attire. Her muse colour is light green.
    • Polyhymnia: The Muse of Sacred Poetry. She is the most well-traveled of the sisters and uses her documented experiences to teach her class. She is of medium height with deep red hair and chakra colours located down her outfit. Her muse colour is purple.
  • Apollo: Apollo constantly wishes he had thought of the Muse Academy before Calliope did, but he is content with the role of Deputy Head, offering his musical and medicinal skills wherever they are needed.
  • Psyche: It is suspected that Psyche only took the job as counselor and receptionist at the Academy to get away from her obsessive mother-in-law. Regardless, she is a great asset to the school, always willing to lend a helping hand. She has the ability to make ghost-like butterfly wings protrude from her back.
  • Ted: Ted is a bad-tempered centaur that helps guard the school at night. He is mean to the students and clearly not in his element, so why Calliope still keeps him around is beyond any of the residents of Prie.
  • Max: Max is an upbeat elf who works in the stables, looking after the mythological equines that the Academy helps to conserve. He also works as a valet, transporting people to and from the Muse Academy.

[edit] Bad Guys

  • Charles Fairfax Jr.: Charlie's older brother has yet to prove himself to be a real villain, but there's certainly something fishy about him. He's 'mommy's little prince' and the man of the house now that his dad is away on business. He delights in giving Charlie a hard time over anything and will deliberately stir things to get her in trouble with their mother.

[edit] Miscellaneous

  • Mrs Carlotta Fairfax: Charlie's mother is constantly 'keeping up with the Joneses'. She owns her own interior design company, is wealthy and tries to be as high-class as possible. It is this desire that urges her to enroll Charlie in the Muse Academy, which she believes is a finishing school in England. Her husband is also a businessman who rarely returns home from Paris.
  • Mr Charles Fairfax: Charlie's father is never seen in the comic. He is a businessman at work in Paris.
  • Carlotta Fairfax Jr: Eight-year-old Carlotta Fairfax is a meek little girl who tries to blend into the background as much as possible. Her personality doesn't seem to have developed yet.
  • Kenny and Kerry: Twin leprechaun characters that can be seen in the background at the Academy. Both have bi-coloured eyes, though they alternate on each twin. They are Comedy majors.
  • Itch: A neurotic-looking fae that can be seen around the Academy and Prie. He is short, has messy black hair, green eyes and long ears.
