Obsolete is a Canadian webcomic written and illustrated by Sean Skerry. Each entry consists of humourous gag or pantomime cartoons featuring a wide variety of characters and subjects. Each cartoon is a stand-alone entry and as such there are no story lines and few recurring characters. The humour of the series often relies on sarcastic interpretations of simple puns and irreverent visual gags.

[edit] Series Background and History
The name Obsolete was chosen to reflect the means with which the cartoons are created. When first introduced in 2005, cartoons were drawn entirely within the computer graphic painting program MS Paint, a program which at that time would have been considered outdated in terms of graphic illustration software. The first cartoon was randomly drawn by request, which lead to the creation of the series.
Each cartoon was originally composed of crudely drawn images with limited colours and the accompanying punchline also being 'drawn' within the program. The first 100 cartoons (Volume 1) were executed in this fashion, with the quality and composition of strips slightly improving as the series progressed.
[edit] Publication
Obsolete Cartoons were first posted online on an infrequent basis to a website hosted freely by a friend of the author. The original site featured links and imagery once again rendered entirely in MS Paint. The website underwent several redesigns, eventually moving to the official Skerry.ca address where it remains today.
In addition to being published on the internet, Obsolete has also appeared in a small number of printed mediums, most notably 'Creaturesall' magazine based out of Calgary, Alberta. The magazine featured two Obsolete cartoons in the back section of each bi-monthly publication. Black & White versions of the cartoon strip have appeared in a handful of Atlantic Canadian College and University student newspapers. Obsolete is currently only published online.
[edit] Characters
While there are no "main" characters, there are some recurring character themes. Subjects frequently include anthropomorphic animals, inanimate objects, monsters and regular people.
Volume 1 featured a handful of recurring characters, most notably 'Philip Q. Giraffe' and 'Rodney X. Mole' who appeared together in a total of 8 cartoons, but have yet to appear in Volume 2. With the introduction of the second volume (#101 and onward), a once-featured halibut character known only as 'Crazy-Eyes Hal' has since served as a mascot and identifying mark for the series.
There have also been several instances of characters bearing the likenesses of the author's friends and family.
[edit] Current Cartoon Production
Obsolete is currently available in its entirety online. New cartoons are posted on an infrequent basis, and the series is partway through the second volume, (#101 - #200). The production quality of cartoons in Volume 2 has greatly improved from earlier entries. Cartoons are now hand illustrated with a nib pen, then coloured digitally. Volume 2 features a standard size for all cartoons and taglines are presented with the more practical use of a font.
With the recent introduction of a Facebook Fan Page, fans of Obsolete have the option of being updated as new artwork is posted on the official site.
