Sam and Fuzzy is a webcomic most commonly published in a four-panel format. It has been on the web since 2001 and publishes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with an accompanying news post by the author upon each update. Sam and Fuzzy is drawn by hand with a distinctive black and white style, utilizing heavy lines and dark shadows. There are currently over 400 strips in the comic archive.

The main drive behind the story is the bizarre dynamic between the two main protagonists - Sam and his friend Fuzzy, and how this dynamic - when transposed onto their everyday situations - creates all manner of absurd and humorous consequences. The 'everyday' nature of these everyday situations, however, is most certainly not assured - as Sam and Fuzzy adopts a certain pseudo-surrealist element in its plot construction. The comic broaches such subjects as the happenings of a group of perpetually underworked Ninja Mafia, a demonic fridge, time travel, shark wrestling, and fuzzy's mother coming to visit. Yet despite the humorous absurdity, the comic frequently touches on profound and serious notes.

[edit] The Author

The comic is written and drawn by Sam Logan, a Canadian hailing from Victoria, British Columbia. Sam is infrequently self-referenced in the comic.

Sam Logan is currently the chairman of the popular Dayfree Press group, which includes other popular webcomics such as Girly, Able and Baker, Questionable Content, and White Ninja Comics. Although Sam and Fuzzy is less well-known than some other online comics, the site has been linked to by well-known artists such as John Allison, creator of Scary Go Round, and "Tycho" (Jerry Holkins), creator of Penny Arcade.

[edit] The Characters

Sam - One of the two main characters in the comic. Sam, who is (presumably) a 20-something human, works in a bookstore. Formerly, Sam worked as a taxicab driver for X-per-S taxis, although a dangerous mission relating to the infamous (yet always unseen) Carlyle cost Sam both his taxi and his job. He is now working at the bookstore in order to pay back back the damages to the owner of X-per-S taxi, although it is uncertain whether he will return.

Sam currently dates Candice, although has previously had a relationship with Alexa.

Fuzzy - Fuzzy is Sam's roommate - a short bear like creature. Fuzzy is known for his great propensity to sway between extremes of political movements/ideologies, namely communism and capitalism. Fuzzy also frequently embarks on get-rich-quick schemes, with consistently dubious results. Some may speculate that he has anti-social tendencies which often border on homicidal. Very, very sensitive about his eyebrows.

Butcher - Butcher is a stray cat that was taken in by Sam, and first appeared near the very beginning of the comic's run. Butcher, despite appearing to be in a permanent vegetative state, appears to have delusions of kitty grandeur... and spatulas. Butcher has recently given birth to several kittens, although one seems to resemble a dinosaur.

The Fridge - Sam's fridge was previously possessed by demonic forces, which may or may not have been a result of the electricity being cut off. Currently occupies the body of a Ninja Mafia member. The Fridge is also a potential homage to the infrequently updated webcomic "Jackie's Fridge".

Mr Ackerman - The owner of the X-per-S taxi firm, and insists he is not from planet Earth. His sanity has come into question several times, including the re-enactments of Sam and Fuzzy's adventures with sock-puppets.

Lance - Sam's ex-workmate at X-per-S taxi. Rival of Sam.

Carlyle - An always unseen employee of X-per-S taxi. He is always called upon to take the most dangerous and important jobs, and once gave Sam some deep advice about life, though Sam did not know it was him. He was also seen giving Fuzzy some advice too.

The Ninja Mafia - A parody of a Yakuza gang, with less-than competent members. Fuzzy currently works for the ninjas without Sam's knowledge. Fuzzy's 'squad' includes Scott (uptight by-the-books leader), the rebellious Jackson, and the ambitious Sexxica. Ox is the 4th member, although his blockheaded nature comes into question.

Future Fuzzy - Fuzzy has also shown a limited capability for time travel, and always appears adorning a sombrero, and with an onomatopoetic "FWOOSH!!!". He first exemplified this skill in comic 138.

Alexa - Alexa is Sam's previous girlfriend, who currently works in the same bookstore as Sam. They broke up due to Fuzzy being a problematic figure in the relationship.

Andrea - Andrea is a co-worker in the bookstore. A cheerful lady who Fuzzy gets along with quite well.

Candice - Candice is Sam's current girlfriend, and works as a delivery girl. Recent revelations have suggested that she is a wannabe satanic hipster. Other than this, her past remains somewhat mysterious.

Rikk Estoban - One of Fuzzy's infamous friends, Rikk is an "artist" who only is only interested in death and gore. Rikk was originally hired by Fuzzy to draw his comic "Skull Panda", and has had recurring role since. Rikk is something of a mystery, since he's provided a guest comic for Questionable Content, and comics 370 and 389 in Sam and Fuzzy. Sam Logan has hinted that he's a real person, but the character seems to parody comic book artist Jhonen Vasquez.

Skull Panda - Skull Panda was first created by Fuzzy, when looking for a character "that will appeal to alienated youths, and wannabe social outcasts". Although after this 'creation' Skull Panda appears to have become a wholly autonomous character. In his first incarnation it was firmly established that skull panda loves kitties. The only known language of the panda is constructed by the repetition of the phrase "Narn".

Skull panda has also been a protagonist in the ongoing pseudo-feud between Sam Logan and Jeph Jaques (see the section "Webcomic Rivalry") - having killed the latter's main Questionable Content character, Marten, by implanting a broken Arcade Fire CD into his eye sockets, and hacking him to death.

Chompy - Chompy is a horribly deformed cat that was first mistaken for a dinosaur. He has since been adopted by unbalanced artist Rikk Estoban. He is very cute (at least without the hair).

[edit] Webcomic Rivalry

Sam Logan sometimes pretends to have a fierce rivalry with Questionable Content author Jeph Jacques. Jeph has levelled such accusations at Sam Logan as the existence of the Hobolliseum of Doom in his basement, where Sam supposedly stages brutal hobo fighting tournaments.

The full list of "accusations", and their rebuttals can be found here.

Sam Logan has recently pointed out that it is all just a joke (as some readers may infer from the above link). He explains this in the comments at the bottom of this page
