[edit] History
Tales From Band Camp was started in April 1996, and still continues today. It evolved from a strip that Brown drew about her own college marching band in 1993, which she called Tales From the Redcoat Band.
[edit] Characters
All of the characters in Tales From Band Camp are anthropomorphic animals.
The main protagonist of the comic is Buster Bulldog, a bulldog who usually plays the bassoon.
Other regular characters include:
- Mr. Sharpenflatte- the fictional high school's band director
- Mr. Culdesac- the assistant band director
- Tom Katte- the band's drum major
- Katherine- a freshman clarinet player
- Daphne- an oboe-playing duck
- Kevin- a trumpet player
- Rick- a saxophone player
- Beth- a flautist, piccolo player, and section leader
[edit] Band Stereotypes
Many of the characters and jokes in Tales From Band Camp tend to poke fun at band stereotypes, including section-related characterizations.
[edit] Author Background
Amy Brown is an alumni of the Cedar Shoals High School Marching Jaguar Band in Athens, Georgia. Brown went to the University of Georgia, where she drew a comic called Buster Bulldog that was published in the Red and Black student newspaper. She also was a member of the University of Georgia Redcoat Band. Currently, Brown plays bassoon in the Greenville Concert Band, located in Greenville, South Carolina. Her band experiences have helped provide inspiration from her comic, along with other sources, including ideas from readers.
Brown also has another website, DAWGToons, where, among other things, she draws "random UGA cartoons" for The Anti-Orange Page, a University of Georgia fan site. [1]
Brown also drew a webcomic called Tikaboo Peak, which is now on hiatus. On the site, Brown has stated that she does not plan to continue it. [2]
[edit] Publication
Tales From Band Camp is featured in Fanfare Magazine, from Marching Show Concepts.
