The Day it Snowed is a humor webcomic created by Art Frederick on September 23, 2003. The Day it Snowed lasted until August 19, 2005 when the author called for an indefinite hiatus citing "The last several months haven't been up to par and I feel the strip is becoming a parody of itself", along with wanting to spend more time on his new comic Jack of All Blades. As of April 1st 2006 The Day it Snowed returned to life as part of an elaborate April Fools joke put on by Art and Zach at Jack of All Blades. Art decided in the end to return to his previous comic and continue updating it on Mondays.

Waf (The Green Penguin)- The main character of the strip, spends most of his time complaining and causing trouble for the rest of the cast. After a year of strips the Author gave him his trademark blue vest. At the final comic strip Waf announces he is leaving the Tundra indefinitely for a big adventure. Before he leaves his friends Gizmo and Sparky give him T.E.T.S. (Tactical Ecclesiastical Targeting Signs) which serve as his primary weapon in Jack of All Blades. Also the penguin Demi-Goddess Rose provides him with her goggles which allow her to see anything he sees. Waf's race is Gentoo Penguin.

Checkers (The Red Penguin)- Waf's best friend. Checker's character changed a lot through TDiS's near two year run. Originally he was Waf's really cool punk friend, and slow transformed into a jock. Checkers was the only character who understood Waf and often times was annoyed with his shenanigans. After a year of strips Checkers permanently kept his trademark spiky green hair. Checker's race is Gentoo Penguin.

Gizmo (The Light Blue Penguin)- Gizmo is the third youngest penguin, and by far the smartest. Gizmo's inventions include a death-ray, T.E.T.S., and a cure for AIDS. He greatly dislikes Waf throughout the story and is frequently injured by Waf's bad ideas. After year one began wear a red necktie regularly. Gizmo's race is Little Blue Penguin.

Sparky (The Deep Blue Penguin)- Gizmo's younger brother and closest friend. At first the only word Sparky could say was "Swoot", but after getting smacked in the head with a rock he regained his ability to talk right. After the first year Sparky began wearing a red bow tie. Sparky's race is Little Blue Penguin.

Etak (The Purple Penguin)- Waf's sister and the official doctor of the tundra. Throughout the story Etak is dating Patches except for a few weeks where she dumped him citing that he was a coward as the reason. After the first year Etak obtained a red hair bow. She later [became a teacher]. Etak's race is Gentoo Penguin.

Palmer (The Brown Penguin)- Originally introduced to defeat Gizmo and Sparky when they created a giant death ray. Palmer is the wisest penguin with a large mental collection of emo quotes. From his introduction to the finally Palmer wore his trusty head band. Palmer's race is Stone Cracker Penguin

Patches (The Orange Penguin)- The biggest, strongest and most cowardly penguin. When dumping Patches, Etak composed a list of over 600 of his fears, only forgetting his fear of rejection. Patches works as the local climbing instructor, but is terrified of heights. Patches's race is King Penguin.

Penguin God, The (The Grey Penguin)- The mischievous penguin god rules over the tundra with glee and exuberance. Unlike the other deities the Penguin God often babies his penguins causing them to be lazy and self centered. The Penguin god has one daughter named Rose who is inexplicably mothered by Checkers. The Penguin God wore his emo glasses from start to finish of the strip. Emperor Penguin.

Rose (The Pink Penguin)- Rose by far the youngest of all the Penguins being less than a year old. Much like her father height comes fairly naturually to her and she quickly grew to the size of Sparky. Like her father Rose has magical powers and isn't afraid to use them. At the end of the story Rose gives her emo glasses to Waf so she can make sure he is ok on his journy. Rose's race is Emperor Penguin.
